Kaieteur News – Sophia Dolphin’s journey into marketing and sales began with a bicycle. As a child, the Glo-See Market and PR founder recalled that she often saw her neighbour playing with a bike and wanted one for herself. However, growing up in a low income family with her grandmother, that was not something they could have afforded.
During her late nights studying by lamp light, she thought of ways to make her dreams a reality. Out of the darkness came a brilliant idea. The young Dolphin took matters into her own hands and began selling her lunch to her primary school classmates. She saved the money she made to buy the bicycle. Her lunch became so popular that she began asking granny for more lunch to meet demand. These humble beginnings set her on the path to becoming an entrepreneur.
Today, she has combined her lifelong passion for marketing and sales and started Glo-See Marketing and PR, an impactful business built on a people-centred model. Dolphin’s company provides a wide range of services, including visual/radio marketing, public relations, sales and marketing, event planning and hosting, blogging, and podcasting. In addition, Glo-See gives clients a personal touch by using innovative methods to engage the consumers in their niche. The company operates in a market niche focusing on sustainable products, wellness and health.
It was formed but she spent 15 years working in sales and marketing at Gizmos and Gadgets. However, she left her job in 2017 to focus on her business. Consequently, Glo-See serves companies that have similar branding. Promoting personal growth and development has been the focus of her business from the inception. Although she registered the firm in 2016, for this businesswoman, Glo-See was decades in the making.
She said her company was born from a life filled with many challenges. These challenges occurred throughout her adolescence and into young adulthood. One incident in particular still stands out in her mind; this was when bandits ambushed her and her father. She was forced to witness the murder of her father during that robbery. She counts this as one of the most traumatic experiences of her existence.
However, hardships affect everyone differently and Dolphin has chosen to maintain a positive outlook through it all. Though she has experienced many things she wouldn’t wish for others but wouldn’t trade her life with anyone else, she has used her pain to cultivate a resilient spirit and desire to improve the lives of everyone around her.
Added to this, she said being a mother of three wonderful children and a survivor of domestic violence, her mission is to touch lives starts at home. “The greatest gift you can give your child is confidence,” she said. Her daily mission is to ensure that her children are empowered. She believes equipping her children to succeed is her most outstanding personal achievement. Seeing her son build his own business and receive awards is a testament to her efforts as a parent.
According to Dolphin, her faith reinforces her positive outlook on life. Without God, she doesn’t think that any of her success would be possible. “I run my business with a lot of faith. That’s why sometimes I like to say that God is my business partner.”
She shared that her faith guides her business and is the foundation for how she nurtures her children.
Her business name represents these sentiments. Glo-See stands for “God Loves Orion – Sophia, Ezekiel, and Emma.” That familial love is what Dolphin aims to extend to her customers through Glo-See Marketing and PR.
The businesswoman added, “My biggest motivator is my love for people. I work hard every day to ensure people leave my presence inspired. At Glo-See, our messages and marketing deliver an empowering message to consumers. Focusing on making our clients better help keep 90 percent of customers recurring.”
She says that she is not surprised at her longevity in the marketing arena and this is among her most significant career achievement. “As a young Guyanese businesswoman, I’m proud to see that my company has remained relevant. We’ve survived pressure from more prominent companies and even the Covid-19 pandemic. After all these years, we’ve become a household name.”
One of the biggest reasons for Glo-See’s longevity and success is, ‘Say It Out Loud’, a visual/radio show on 89.5 FM that Dolphin has been running for over five years. She uses her platform to promote personal development and sustainable products that add value to the lives of her listeners. When asked about Glo-See’s vision, Dolphin said, “we aspire to be the leading global marketing and PR service provider to promote sustainability and wellness to growing businesses and organisations using unique sales and marketing strategies, to create impact and make new connections.”
This vision inspired Glo-See’s Networking Brunch, which debuted in 2019. The brunch is back after a two-year hiatus due to Covid-19—Glo-See’s Networking Brunch 2.0 is being held today, Sunday, August 21, 2022. At the brunch, patrons will enjoy good food and great company while making new connections.
Dolphin believes that people can learn from her story to overcome their own challenges and become successful. Despite dealing with poverty, depression and domestic violence at various points in her life, the businesswoman used her knowledge, talents, and experience to build a successful business. She is indebted to her family and friends, who kept her on track and often made priceless contributions.
Added to this, she said customers are perhaps the most influential people in her journey as a businesswoman. Glo-See would not exist if not for the clients who continue to believe in the products and support the business, keeping it alive even through the pandemic.
Although she’s come a long way, Dolphin still wants to achieve more extraordinary things personally and with her business. Currently, she’s participating in the ‘Road-to-Growth Programme’ delivered by the Cherie Blair Foundation for Women.
After the programme ends, Dolphin hopes to continue adding more skills to grow her business. In addition, she strongly encourages other entrepreneurs to keep learning and maintain a positive mindset since the failure to do either will hinder success. Her message for anyone reading her story is: “I don’t see obstacles. I see opportunities. That’s the spirit of Glo-See Marketing and PR.”
