Kaieteur News – Already established as a premiere garbage disposal company in Guyana, Puran Brothers is looking to expand its range of service to help supply sand and loam to the booming construction sector in the country.
The company has submitted its Project Summary to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and is on standby to commence mining along the right bank of the Essequibo River, in an area popularly known as Ampa Bay.
The area, Kaieteur News understands, consists of approximately 500 acres. The Project Summary states that about 30,000 cubic yards (CYD) of sand will be extracted from the site on a monthly basis, whereas 10,000 CYD of loam will be mined during the same period.
Puran Brothers have proposed to transport the materials from the mining site to the Parika Outfall using a 1,200 CYD capacity barge. The materials will be offloaded there before being transported to respective project sites while excess materials will be stored at the Crane, West Coast Demerara compound.
It is understood that the company will be supplying the Central Housing and Planning Authority (CH&PA), the private sector and interested individuals, as well as contractors in the oil and gas sector, once the green-light is given by the regulator body.
Based on the estimated reserves, the mining activities is likely to be conducted over a 45 to 50 years time span.
To support the mining activities, Puran Brothers pointed out in its Summary file that a perimetre boundary of the plot of land will have to be established, along with a road alignment; area for workers’ living quarters and operations office; area for mechanical workshop and parking of machinery and equipment; mining pits, area to store trees and other shrubs during land clearing exercise and a waste dump, among others.
It is estimated that about 30 employees will be hired to assist in the operations. Puran Brothers is aiming to startup their work programme by September this year, but is still awaiting word from the EPA.
In presenting the 2022 Budget, Minister with responsibility for Finance, Dr. Ashni Singh reported that estimates show that the construction sector grew by 29.8 percent when compared with 2020. This, he explained, was underpinned by both the major public infrastructure buildout that is currently underway, as well as increased private sector activity in industrial, commercial, and residential construction. Dr. Singh noted that the growth in construction activity is likely to continue this year.
