Dear Editor,
Reference is made to the writing titled “Letter surfaces proving insurance talks were held on full liability coverage” (KN August 11).I cut to the marrow: it is a fake or it is real. If it is the former, then no more needs to be said; if authentic, then it says so much.
My thinking is that company assumed coverage for such related oil spill contingencies would be something on which no government, no leader, no State agency would quibble over, mess around with, or engage in tricks about. Coverage is simply too vital to the national interests to be subject to what is nothing less than the unthinkable, including the contemplation of genocide, with more than the economic involved. For Guyanese (any Guyanese) possibly to willfully go to the lengths that we have seen, heard, and read amounts to one thing and one thing only: the equivalent of the worst of betrayals. It might be considered regular politics and accepted leadership practice, but I denounce it, and those behind any such barbarity and profanity, for endangering the welfare of this country, both today and at any time in the future. Surely, Exxon’s interests cannot be so superior to the considerations of what is right and safe, protective and prospering, for Guyana. Surely, this country could not have been quartered in this manner, and put-up for sale so heinously by those responsible for our security, our wellbeing.
Moreover, I have absorbed the barrage of official smears heaped upon a conscientious Guyanese, Dr. Vincent Adams, the former EPA head, and I ask all Guyanese one question: do we have no decency left, not one shred, not even one speck? I discern that there are no limits to which those in the PPP Government and their team would not go to deceive and mislead the people of this country, even beyond the point where they could be imperiled, as in right now. It should be noted that I endured the pain of using ‘team’ and not such disparaging words as stooges or lackeys or craven sycophants to identify those who would besmirch a knowledgeable, highly skilled, and truly patriotic Guyanese, such as Dr. Vincent Adams. Is there no gutter too low where some would not sink, no sewerage system so foul, that officers in the political and public service spaces of this putrid country still find it delightful to cavort and endorse the wishes, the dictates, of Exxon. For what we have observed in the past few days are the company’s dodges, cover ups, and strenuous resistance to do its part by committing bindingly to spend the money needed to protect Guyanese. I hope that we will all come to our senses, and detect that there is neither PPP nor PNC, black or brown or all the blues and hues in between, but only Guyanese exposed and possibly blindsided.
Editor, when there are denials and this degree of studied disingenuousness from today, then it does not demand too much insightfulness to appreciate the boat in which we could find ourselves, should an oil spill occur offshore. Worse still, this again confirms that Guyana does not deserve the respect to be considered a true country, but a society lacking so much. When our own people can consort so willingly, so cleverly, and so doggedly with those who exploit us, then regard us as the enemy, because some expenses have to be accounted for, then we are still in loincloths and walking around with clubs seeking to destroy each other.
Before anyone gets carried away, this is less about Vincent Adams, it is about the people who would sell weapons to our torturers and scorners, and those who slavishly support any wrong that they inflict on this nation. In the end, the official concealments, official subterfuges, and leadership weaknesses put on bright display by all-decisionmakers and widest cross-section of subscribers-emphasize how beholden we are to foreign masters, how proud we are to be enslaved. Traitors too.
Sincerely,
GHK Lall
