Kaieteur News – The Cyril Potter College of Education will join forces with the Guyana Golf Association and Nexgen Golf Academy in an innovative programme that will eventually allow all of their 5000+ Teacher Trainees access to learning how to play and teach golf.
The ‘Train the Trainers’ project that was initiated by the GGA/Nexgen Golf Academy with the Ministry of Education Allied Arts Unit in January 2021, has seen the development of Golf in 102 schools across eight regions and this is a tremendous boost that promises that all regions will have fully certified Trainers and equipment for learners across the country.
The collaboration will enhance the institution’s Physical Education course, with emphasis on the relevant unit therein. The programme between the GGA, Nexgen Golf and CPCE is expected, principally, to equip physical education majors with the competencies necessary to conduct training sessions upon return to their respective schools.
“With Golf being an elective on the physical education syllabus for CSEC, and the expectation that thousands of learners will join the 112 students who took Golf in 2022, it is vital that more teachers are trained in the sport,” said Vice Principal of Curriculum and Instruction Ms. Kevaun Sears, who promises that she will do as much as possible to get it done.
Vice Principal of Administration Mr. Errol London expressed optimism about the imminent partnership between the GGA, Nexgen Golf Academy and CPCE. It was noted that the possibility of actually playing golf at CPCE centres was certainly a most welcomed development. The Vice Principal of Administration was particularly appreciative of the commitment of Nexgen Golf Academy president Aleem Hussain’s promise to the provision of equipment, training, improvement of the college all-purpose ground and guidance on grounds management and fundraising
“I saw firsthand the sheer excitement that the 2022 Secondary School learners got from Golf and I was present for the last Train the Trainers program at the Nexgen Golf Academy. The ease with which everyone learnt and their focus following the instruction impressed me so much that I promised Mr. Hussain to push the sport,” said Mr. Stanley Sports Coordinator.
President of the GGA Aleem Hussain has been the driving force for golf since 2018 and sees this as quite possibly the most impactful step in development of the sport “with thousands of teachers being exposed to the sport, we will now have the means to reach every student in the nation! I am confident that Guyana will dominate on the world stage based on the sheer number of persons who will be playing golf by end of 2023.”
Hussain said efforts to develop private courses such as Maraiko Bay and public courses in Silica City is only the beginning and there is going to be a demand for as many as 15 golf facilities within 24 months with approximately 20,000 new players seeking to play on a regular basis.
Additionally, Nexgen Golf is in the process of revolutionizing the game by creating scaled full length golf courses that only require 8-10 acres of land, allowing for sitting closer to developed areas. These will be lighted to allow for night play under cool conditions and after hours programmes for children.
