DCC, Georgetown and Demerara U-15 fast bowler, Shane Prince, was recently selected for the Guyana Team which will participate in the Regional U-15 cricket tournament in Grenada from August 18-28.
Shane is one five players selected from Georgetown Cricket Association (GCA) team, which won the Demerara Cricket Board’s U-15 Inter-Association, while six players are from Berbice as the two most progressive areas have dominated selection on the National team with two coming from Essequibo and one from East Coast.
Born on July 20, 2008 in Guyana’s Capital City to Maxine Edwards and Terrence Prince, Shane Price attended the Winfred Gardens Primary and is now going to the St. John’s College.
“Since Shane was about 3-4 years he always with a wood batting anything he puts his hands on. As he got older he said he wanted to be a cricketer, sometimes I would be taking him home from school and if there is cricket going on like CPL I have to stop where there is a television, sometimes at a shop for him to watch, so his father decided to join him in a club and that was his big dream,” explained his mother Maxine.
Shane plays for DCC and might not know that the Queenstown Club produced Test players Maurice Fernandes, Lance Gibbs, Clive Lloyd, Roger Harper and most recently, Travis Dowlin while Roy Fredericks also played for DCC.
“Yes. We encourage him but his Dad is on top with him very seriously. Sometimes they would stay away from school unknown to me just to play cricket. I would usually get upset because I told him you got to have education too, so the board wrote a letter to the headmistress when there is cricket there wouldn’t be any issues,” disclosed Maxine who lives at Parafaite Harmony West Bank Demerara.
Maxine explained that she and Shane’s father are not together and informed he lives with Shane at Durban Backlands.
“That’s because of the traffic flow with crossing the bridge, we decided for him to be in Georgetown in order to get to school early.”
The main persons that mainly helped are his elder brother, Devon, who resides in Maryland and his father who takes all his time and effort with him.
“Shane went to Essequibo and Berbice to play and his father went that far with him. But due to my work most time I can’t be with them but my prayers are always there. I always tell him to acknowledge God in everything you do,” stated Shane’s mother.
“Although we’re not together we try to play a vital role as parents because of Shane. He has his elder brother in Maryland and his second brother Shawn Mars. Shane has no sisters,” his Mom said.
Shane took 2-8 on his U-15 Inter-County debut against Essequibo at Imam Bacchus on the Essequibo Coast after being the leading pacer for Georgetown in DCB Inter-Association tournament.
He will be keen to continue his good work with the ball next month in the Spice-Isle.
