Limited library hours

Dear Editor,

Kaieteur News – The National Public Library was founded in 1909 and until now, it has not been catering to the needs of an educated public in 2022.

There are many parents, children, youth, university students and professional (adult learners) who voice their opinions and disgust towards the limited library hours. Also, the library building is in need of a serious overhaul (i.e. new up-to-date and bigger building). STEM should have its own interactive wing. We know what the Minister and the Library leadership team will say, however, we appeal to both, to find a way to extend the library hours for the benefit of education.

In Guyana, the National Public Library closes at 4pm Monday to Friday, closed on Saturday, Sundays and holidays.  This schedule is suitable for the Library team but not the learning society preparing for oil wealth.  Editor, please allow me the space to highlight the other libraries in the Caribbean.   Barbados closes at 5pm (Monday to Saturday); Trinidad and Tobago closes at 5pm and Saturdays at 1pm; Belize closes at 6pm and St. Vincent closes at 5pm and is open on Saturdays.  Can the leadership at the Library in Guyana begin to discuss and make changes to its scheduled hours, especially on Saturdays?  Thank you.
