“Young entrepreneurs are the ones who will spearhead the rise of economic growth in this country with their perseverance and drive and, given the opportunity to do so, will take Guyana to the heights of sustainability and global inclusivity.”

Kaieteur News – Young Berbician, Tyra McAlmont certainly did not sleep on the creative talents she was gifted with. As such, she is now the owner of a handmade jewellery business called ‘Beads & Cuffs’. This emerging venture offers a wide range of handcrafted jewellery to suit just about any occasion.
Twenty-two-year-old McAlmont, who is a second year University of Guyana physiotherapy student, during a recent interview said that ‘Beads & Cuffs’ all started mid last year after she received a jewellery making kit from her mother.
With some free time on her hand as a result of the pandemic, she decided to make something good out of it and put her skills to test.
“The concept for Beads & Cuffs came when I received a jewellery making kit from my mom for my birthday last year. This was in the middle of the pandemic and I was beyond bored. And since I love everything crafty, I said why not try jewellery making,” she shared.
McAlmont, who is proud of being part of the business arena related that apart from her much appreciated clients, her biggest support came from her family, more specifically, her mother, sister, a friend and her late grandmother. “They have been with me from day one, giving advice and constructive criticism along the way, as well as assisting with funding, material sourcing from as far as the motherland (Africa) and getting the word out there,” she emphasised with pride.
To sum it up, they too are the driving force behind the operation she holds today.
Before things got to where it is though, McAlmont recalled that the biggest challenge she had to overcome was to get out of her comfort zone to get things done. McAlmont, who describes herself as a quiet person, said that the thought of having to confabulate with anyone outside of her comfort zone was crippling. “But I made the step and here I am today,” she proudly stated.
The young woman who wants to continue making a meaningful contribute to society said that her long term goal for Beads and Cuffs is for it to be more than a local name. She wants it to surpass the confines of the country. This, she hopes to achieve by creating one of a kind pieces of jewellery that can have sentimental value to her customers.
McAlmont, who has her mind set on achieving her outlined goals, is of the view that “Young entrepreneurs are the ones who will spearhead the rise of economic growth in this country with their perseverance and drive and, given the opportunity to do so, will take Guyana to the heights of sustainability and global inclusivity.”
In order to contribute to the country’s economic growth, the young woman mentioned that more must be done to give way to young entrepreneurs and small businesses.
Optimistic that there is more that can be done to boost small business, McAlmont noted that reducing the tax on certain items, providing efficient services that deal with the validation and certification of small business, revising of loan plans or grants and creating a platform where persons desirous of starting a business can be properly informed, are just some of the ways that the relevant authorities can render assistance.
