This year’s Abdulla Hamid Basketball Foundation organised summer coaching clinic at the Mackenzie High School hard court will be one with a difference according to former national player Abdulla Hamid. This is because, Hamid explained: “We got started Monday with the combined Hamid and Joy Basketball Foundation, as it’s the first year I have a professional Guyanese basketball player Ms. Joy Adams who is from Amelia’s Ward, Linden, who is willing to give back to the Linden community coming on board with the Abdulla Hamid Basketball Foundation.
Over the past three days since it began Hamid said, “We have seen the inclusion of more youths between the ages nine to 16 turning up and we are trying to have them learn the fundamentals like passing, shooting, dribbling, laying up and defensive drills so that when they return to school they are equipped to play the game.
Having held this summer programme for over three decades, now in its 33rd year, the veteran coach Hamid is confident that it will be another successful basketball clinic.
He noted that Ms. Adams, who plays professionally in Spain, has provided the balls and snacks among other things to ensure it is well attended.
He said as long as players turn up they will be no cut off limits even though the numbers have exceeded the initial 50 he had targeted.
The camp starts from 9.00am and ends to 11.30am and Hamid is hoping that other coaches could be encouraged to have similar clinics in other sports disciplines for other youths in Linden and Region 10 (Upper Demerara/ Upper Berbice).
On Tuesday the camp was given a surprise visit by Regional Chairman of Region 10, Deron Adams, and the youths were delighted to have his presence as they went through their paces.
The camp is held Mondays to Fridays and will conclude on Saturday July 23 at the venue for the coaching clinic the Mackenzie High School hard court.
