Sunil Dhaniram stars with an unbeaten 83
Once again in gloomy conditions at the picturesque Ynystawe Cricket Club ground, Windies skipper Zamin Amin won the toss and inserted the opposition to take first strike.
The Wales openers, Iwan Rees and Rowan Evans, made great use of the opportunity by giving their team a solid opening partnership of 90 runs before Zamin Amin won a LBW verdict against Rees who contributed a well composed 42 off 63 deliveries. His exit brought former testite, Matthew Maynard to the crease who displayed his class with a polished half century at better than run a ball whilst adding 74 with Evans for the 2nd wicket. Evans finished on 68 off 113 deliveries to anchor his team to 216 for 5 when their overs expired. The Windies Masters did well to bring back the game and limit Wales to their eventual score. Zamin Amin finished with 2 for 35 off his 9 overs with a wicket apiece for Sunil Dhaniram, Narine Bidhesi and Azad Mohammed.
Beginning their reply, Windies lost Anthony Sahadeo off the very first ball, caught at slip off the wily Malith Madurasinghe. They then lost Ishwar Maraj and Narine Bidhesi in quick succession to leave the Windies reeling at 4 runs for 3 wickets, all going to Madurasinghe who got appreciable swing with the new ball. Rajendra Sadeo and Sunil Dhaniram then tried to repair the damage by adding 47 runs for the 4th wicket with little or no trouble. Sadeo tried an expansive cut and had a faint nick to the keeper after making 26 off 30 deliveries and was looking very comfortable at the crease before that injudicious shot.
His wicket started another slump and Windies were staring a massive defeat at 81 for 8 before Hafiz Maohamed joined Dhaniram to add 49 runs for the 9th wicket. Madurasinghe was the chief architect of the Windies demise with 5 for 30 off his 9 overs. Sunil Dhaniram was left stranded on 83 laced with 12 boundaries with Windies only batting 34.5 overs.
Sunil Dhaniram was declared the man-of-the-match for his excellent innings of 83 which was laced with 12 beautiful boundaries, an awesome bowling spell and holding onto a catch out in the deep.
Windies were set to be in London to play their 3rd ODI against a powerful England side at Broxbourne CC yesterday, then against India at Gravesend CC today.
