Kaieteur News – In its effort to ensure that all citizens can be immunised and protected against the deadly COVID-19 disease, the Government is now in the process of sourcing vaccines for children between six months and four years old.
This was announced by Minister of Health, Dr. Frank Anthony, who said on Monday that this week his Ministry will be ordering vaccines for toddlers.
“We have started a process of trying to access the vaccine for the six months to four years age group and in fact, we are right now trying to determine what quantities we will ask for. So this week, we will put in that order and hopefully in the next two months or so we should be able to get some of these vaccines…,” he said during his latest COVID-19 update.
The Minister’s announcement follows the United States’ Food and Drug Administration’s (US-FDA) recent approval that it has given authorised emergency use of the Moderna COVID-19 vaccine and the Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 vaccine for the prevention of COVID-19 to include use in children down to six months of age.
The FDA in a release stated that the Moderna vaccine is administered as a primary series of two doses, one month apart, to individuals six months through 17 years of age, while the Pfizer vaccine is administered as a primary series of three doses in which the initial two doses are administered three weeks apart followed by a third dose administered at least eight weeks after the second dose in individuals six months through four years of age.
The Health Minister also explained that these vaccines for this age group “have been proven to be very safe, they have been studies that have been done both by Pfizer and Moderna, the data from those studies have been reviewed, and the experts have determined that it is safe.”
Minister Anthony mentioned too that while there is no vaccine for children below six months, he is encouraging pregnant mothers to get vaccinated, especially in their third trimester as this would help protect their baby against the virus.
“In terms of children who have just been born and up to six months, one way of getting them protected is to make sure that the mothers, during the pregnancy, that they take their vaccines and it has been shown that mothers who take their vaccine in the third trimester that their children would have enough antibodies to protect them over the next six months,” he shared.
At the moment, the government has been able to source COVID-19 vaccines for persons five years and older.
