2022 Milo Secondary Schools Football Tournament…
– Four more fixtures to be played today
Contrasting wins were recorded by four teams yesterday afternoon when the much anticipated Petra organised 2022 Milo Secondary Schools Football Tournament got underway at the Ministry of Education Ground.
Dolphin Secondary were the first team in winner’s row followed by West Ruimveldt, who had to grind for their victory. The third team to reign supreme on the opening day was Charlestown Secondary, while Carmel copped the final victory. Each match ran for a maximum of one hour.
In the first match of the day, Dolphin Secondary trounced St. John’s College, 4 – 1, with Nicholas Tappin leading the way with a brace. Tappin opened scoring for his team in the 25th minute and closed it with a 60th minute strike.
He was supported by Brian Burnette and Gerry Burnette, who struck in the 29th and 50th minutes, respectively. The opposition’s lone goal was scored by David Xavier in the 20th minute.
The match that followed featured West Ruimveldt and Queen’s College and it turned out to be a closely contested encounter. Neither team was able to get ahead in first half but nine minutes into the second half, Queen’s went ahead when Triston Richard’s scored.
Two minutes later, the scores were once again leveled when Elijah Sattaur picked up the first goal of his double. The nine minutes that followed included Sattaur’s goal (65’) that gave his team the lead, which they kept until the regulation time whistle was sounded.
Match three saw Bishop’s High School being crushed by Charlestown Secondary, 10 – 0, as they recorded the largest victory of the day. There were five different scorers for the winning side with the first coming in the 13th minute from Andrew Carto.
A helmet-trick from Malcolm Hendericks, who was successful in the 27th, 40th, 42nd and 64th minutes, along with doubles from Rihme Matthews (50’, 60’) and Tyler Lyle (22’, 52’) and a single strike from Mickell Andrews (44’) accounted for the other Charlestown goals.
The final match of the day took place under lights and saw Carmel steamroll Bladen Hall Multilateral, 6 – 1. A brace from Leon Sears (8’, 45’) and Dwain Baptiste (20’, 50’) along with a goal each from Matthew Layne (32’) and Nephi Allicock (64th) ensured Carmel’s triumph.
Today the action resumes as Ann’s Grove tackle Uitvlugt from 12:30 hrs then North Ruimveldt battle East Ruimveldt at 14:00 hrs, Golden Grove go head to head with Buxton Secondary in the third match that commences at 15:30 hrs while the fixture between Dolphin Secondary and Charlestown Secondary will complete the day in a showdown which starts at 17:00 hrs.
The tournament continues on June 25 & 26 with the other playing dates being July 2, 3 and 6 while the finale is billed for July 10.
The triumphant team in this tournament will cart off with $300,000 along with the Championship Trophy and Gold Medals to outfit the entire team, while the second place finishers cart off with $200,000, the corresponding trophy and Silver Medals.
