Bruce grabs 4-for as W/Wards skittled out for 78
By Sean Devers
A magnificent 177-opening stand between Skipper Haley Matthews (99) and Kycia Knight (72) powered defending Champions Barbados to an emphatic 149 runs win against the Windwards yesterday at Providence in the opening round of the CB Insurance Women’s Super50.
The 24-year-old Matthews faced 133 balls and hit eight boundaries in magnificent 99, while Knight hammered seven four in a well compiled 72 from 108 balls while Kyshona Knight, Kycia’s twin sister, scored an unbeaten 27 with three fours as Barbados reached 227-2 before dismissing the Windwards for 78 in 23.1 overs.
Japhina Joseph (18) and Pearl Etienne (16) were the only batters to reach 15 as Shanika Bruce with 4-48, Shamilia Connell (3-9) and Aaliyah Alleyne (2-14) conspired to bowl out the Windwards.
Opting to bat first, Kycia Knight and Matthews dominated the bowling with several exquisite shots as the runs came easily before Knight was finally removed by Jannillea Glasgow in the 38th over.
The other Knight joined her captain and together they carried the score to 192 on a good track and fast outfield before Matthews, one short of what would have been a well-deserved century, the classy right hander was LBW to the 40-year-old pacer Etienne.
Knight (27) and Alisa Scantlebury (10) added were both unbeaten when the 50 overs expired for Barbados; winners of both title in 2018 and 2019.
Windwards slumped to 9-6 in the 8th over and without their skipper and most experienced batter Afy Flectcher, were wobbling on the ropes.
Jannillea Glasgow (11) and Japhina Joseph, who hit three fours in 18, offered some fight with a 32-run seventh wicket partnership before Glasgow was removed by Bruce.
Glendeen Turtin, unbeaten on 10 and Etienne (16) put together 24 for the last wicket before Aaliyah Williams ended the innings.
The tournament continues today with Trinidad & Tobago facing the Leewards from 09:30 hrs at Providence.
