Kaieteur News – On Saturday, at the National Cultural Centre tarmac, the Ministry of Health commenced inoculating children from age five to 11 against COVID-19.
The government had announced on June 4, last that it was expecting about 25,000 doses of the Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 vaccines for this age group and would commence a vaccination drive.
True to its promise, the activity kicked off at 09:00hrs on Saturday at the Cultural Centre tarmac, an activity that was graced by Minister of Health, Dr. Frank Anthony and his advisor, Dr. Leslie Ramsammy. Some vehicles were seen trickling in with parents who brought their children to receive the jab.
Some children opted to take their jab in the comfort of their parents’ car in a “drive thru” system while others opted to step out.
As they were being administered the vaccines, some cried, while the braver ones bit their lips as the needle entered their arm.
After being vaccinated, some gave comments to the media and hurried away to take photographs with the Disney mascots present at the vaccination drive while others requested to have their face and arms painted with designs done by Carlus Savory, a graphic artist who volunteered his services to support the cause. One boy told reporters that he feels safer now that he has been vaccinated.
According to Minister Anthony, the ministry was planning the vaccination drive for sometime but was faced with some challenges. He did not share details of the challenges but said that he is grateful that the ministry was able to receive a significant number of vaccine doses to kick start the initiative.
Dr. Anthony explained that the vaccines received are made up of 1/3 of the adult dosage and is customised for children. He noted too that his ministry has been working along with the Ministry of Education to target schools to continue the vaccination of children.
“We have been working with the Ministry of Education and working with schools and sending out information to different schools, requesting information from parents,” Dr. Anthony related.
The minister hinted that once the information is gathered, his ministry will take the vaccination drive to schools with a high percentage of children whose parents want them to be vaccinated.
He pointed out too that the government will be monitoring the response to the COVID-19 vaccination programme for children and if the doses in stock are exhausted quickly then efforts will be made to acquire more.
