Dear Editor,
A friend of mine shared with me Mr Haseef Yusuf letter – “The PPP/C has saved sugar from the guillotine” – and suggested that it was that the Mr Yusuf was responding to a letter I wrote recently. Of course, I must admit that I was not named and cannot say certainly that the writer was speaking about my letter though it seems to give that impression.
Editor, I share fully Mr Yusuf’s views regarding the Coalition actions towards the sugar industry. That certainly is no secret. He is absolutely right. But maybe he did not follow the concern I expressed, which is that I felt that the Vice President was not being honest when he addressed sugar workers among others recently at Hamspshire Village. I am sure too Mr Yusuf would be aware of what took place during that time.
I was taken aback by the writer when he said “that if ever sugar workers withdraw their support for the PPP, GuySuCo would suffer a sudden death, and this time around, the suffering would be unbearable and would escalate to the point of no return”. I am not sure whether Mr Yusuf is advancing a position of the PPP. Is he saying that sugar workers are not allowed to provide political support as they see fit? Additionally, should workers change their political views their industry will be stigmatised for an absence of political support? Knowing the PPP I would not think this is true, at least I hope not. Of course I do recollect at one time Mr Yusuf was seeking to woo sugar workers away from the PPP.
Regards,
Surendra Drepaul
