Dear Editor,
TIGI hereby responds to a letter dated 13th August 2021 from one, Mr. Harry Deodat. (https://www.kaieteurnewsonline.com/2021/08/13/questions-for-alfred-bhulai/). We had somehow missed it.
The answers to the questions in the order he asked them are as follows:
1. The correct and official name as incorporated is Transparency Institute Guyana Inc. This is the name under which an affiliate of the worldwide anti-corruption body Transparency International may operate until it is given full accreditation. At times TIGI is also referred to as Transparency Guyana for short.
2. TIGI welcomes members of the public as members. Attached please find a copy of the current application form. It is also found on our website TIGIGY.ORG
a. Guyanese citizenship
b. An interest in fighting corruption in all its forms
c. Open to individuals and organisations
3. The process to elect office bearers is at an annual general meeting. Please see S8.2 and S13 of our Byelaws, copy attached.
4. Yes. A public advertisement for its AGM precedes the actual election
5. Members of the public may make donations. However, donations may be refused. There is a membership fee.
6. TIGI receives no financial assistance from the Government of Guyana or any other local organization though we believe we ought to. We have approached members of parliament when in government and opposition to no avail. TIGI has been funded in the past for specific projects by the British Government and overseas organisations.
7. Yes, TIGI is the local chapter representative of Transparency International as explained above. When we are fully accredited we can use the full name “Transparency International Guyana”
General comment
TIGI welcomes members from all political parties. The question on our membership form regarding strength of affiliation is for us to determine when a person should recuse himself or herself from any discussion on any matter that touches upon the political. It is also for us to establish whether such a member may not advance to the directorate on account of public perception of his affiliation.
Please also note that the current president is Mr. Frederick W. A. Collins.
We apologise for missing the letter before. We are not averse to responding to questions. In fact, we responded to a similar enquiry only about two months ago. We understand that the Commissioner of Information has shown a particular interest in the answers to the questions above and we hope that this heralds a new beginning to the relationship between the Commissioner of Information and TIGI.
Frederick W. A. Collins
President
