Dear Editor,
The PPP/C government’s agriculture policy has been very proactive since their ascension to political power. Its agriculture minister Zulifikar Mustapha has been extremely busy signing numerous contracts to embellish agriculture in Guyana. His work has made President Irfaan Ali to be recognised within CARICOM and Latin America as the champion of agriculture.
The current CARICOM agriculture being attended by Caribbean Prime Ministers is a testament to Guyana’s agricultural superiority with the PPP/C government.
When the APNU-AFC coalition was in power (2015-2020), it had a very dim agriculture policy. The coalition’s agriculture minister, Noel Holder said on being appointed: “All I know about rice is what I know from eating it”. He was hardly visible in the mix of things and under him agriculture stagnated. This is despite the coalition’s public policy that it would like to make
Guyana the breadbasket of the Caribbean. The coalition blundered by firing some 7000 predominantly Indo-Guyanese sugar workers whose expertise is in agriculture.
The result was the coalition lost the 2020 elections.
Sincerely,
Sultan Mohamed
