Kaieteur News – Football fans which turned for the final night of action in the Annual Mayor’s Cup 9-a-side Inter Ward/Village Knockout Football tournament would have witnessed competitive battles at the Georgetown Football Club (GFC) ground last Sunday. In the end it was the Diamond outfit that stood tall and collected the Mid Atlantic Oil and Gas Company winning purse of $600,000 and the Mayor’s Cup from none other than His Worship Mayor of Georgetown Ubraj Narine in whose honour the tournament was played.
Diamond outlasted Bourda All Stars on sudden death penalty kicks after their contest reached regulation time locked and 0-0. As per tournament rules, following a stalemate the sudden death method was employed to separate the teams, and separate themselves Diamond did.
The action on the night, opened with quarter-final play in the 40-minute games. Bourda All Stars and Den Amstel fought tooth and nail to a 0-0 stalemate with the Bourda boys emerging victorious from the penalty shootout.
Tucville and West Side Spartans were next and followed a similar trend as the preceding game and it was West Side Spartans who came out winners of the shootout.
Sparta Boss changed the trend with a 4-0 win over Friendship Front, while Diamond got past Haslington 2-0.
Marching into the semi-finals, Bourda All Stars held off Sparta Boss to end regulation in a stalemate and win the resulting penalty shootout. Diamond emerged from a similar situation against West Side Spartans.
Sparta Boss then overcame West Side Spartans on penalties to claim the third place.
The Grand Finale ensued with Diamond and the never say die Bourda All Stars battling fiercely but producing no goals in regulation play. Diamond however, held their composure and took the penalty shoot to claim the champions’ honours.
The teams collected the prize money and the respective trophies with a first prize of $600,000 going to Diamond, second prize of $300,000 to Bourda All Stars, third of $200,000 to Sparta Boss and fourth of $100,000 to West Side Spartans.
Tournament Coordinator Lennox Arthur said he was happy for a successful tournament despite a few setbacks, but noted that with football now resuming after a two-year break due to the covid-19 pandemic, he was happy to see the tournament played. He was high in praise of the sponsors who came out in support to aid the successful running of the event. The fan turnout was not that good but Arthur thanked those who came out.
While some teams were not too pleased with having to play three games as against two by some to qualify from the initial stages due to the size of their groups, Arthur noted that they fought their way through the initial 48 which started the contest.
That aside Arthur, the former national footballer and Coach, will look for better next time around seen football is restarting on all levels in the country.
Among the sponsors supporting the tournament were: Mid Atlantic Oil and Gas Company, Maggie’s, IPA, DDL, Digicel, Johil, John Fernandes, General Equipment, Busta, GTT, Namilco, Macorp, New Thriving, Sattar Gafoor, B. Megan, Pritipaul Singh, Ready Mix, Eddie Bobcat, Silvie’s, Caribbean Containers, E Networks, Super Bet, Cummings Electrical, China Trading, Dave Lumber yard, Schlumberger, Maggie’s, Pure Diamond, Gold Target Exports and CIDI.
