Honourable Speaker Manzoor Nadir hosted a victory celebration at Everest Cricket Club on Monday for Elton Dharry, the sponsors and supporters for the recently stage Guyana Fight Night-Road to Redemption.
Elton Dharry addressed the gathering in the presence of from promoter Aleem Hussain, Speaker of the House Manzoor Nadir and promoter Jack Bharat at the reception.
“We were there at the beginning of this journey and it is only fitting that Everest Cricket Club be there at the end to celebrate this incredible achievement by our son of the soil Elton Dharry,” Nadir stated.
Jack Bharat thanked the overseas sponsors: Sleep-In Hotel, Shareef General Hospital, Dave West Indian Imports, Bradley Mechanical Corp, MBBF Foundation, Skyport Homes, Pinegrove Inn Restaurant, NY Security & Communication, Georgetown Abstract, Gemini’s Lounge & Restaurant, New Apple Funding, Jaleel Adam, Steve’s Jewelry, Excalibur Capital, AGT Energy, SA Seafoods, D Ross Express, Yulini’s Travel Agency and Amerigroup Properties.
Hussain praised and thanked local sponsors: the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sport, Demerara Mutual Life Insurance, Comfort Sleep, Samtronix, Morgan’s Investment, Hand in Hand Insurance, Unique Electrical, Caribbean Motor Spares, HRTM Consulting, ReMax Realty, Darthan Investments, Turbo Energy Drink, Banks DIH, Demerara Distillers Ltd (DDL), Sheriff Medical, Sheriff Security, Party Castle, New Thriving Restaurant, Bistro, Giftland OfficeMax, Puran Bros and Nexgen Golf Academy for their support.
Minister Ramson and members of the government were on hand to congratulate the new Champion and renewed the government’s commitment and support of boxing by President Ali and the senior cabinet, saying, “We will allocate $130M towards renovation of the Sports Hall and invest another $20M in gyms and equipment for boxing. We are extremely proud of this achievement by Elton, one that proves to the world that no matter how hard you knock down a Guyanese, we will get back up and win!”
Dharry is now eligible for a shot at the world title which is expected to be hosted right here in Guyana, especially after his incredible performance in front of thousands of Guyanese, including President Dr. Irfaan Ali, Minister of Sports Honourable Charles Ramson, Minister Todd, the High Commissioner of India, NSC Steve Ninvalle and many other top ranking diplomats and government officials who were in the National Stadium to witness him becoming the first man to win, on Guyana’s soil, the highest ranked WBC title!
And what a night it was…even Mother Nature showed that she loves boxing in Guyana, evident from the fact that despite being in midst of a rainy week, the showers held off until the final presentation was completed, with Dharry unanimously winning the WBC International Super Flyweight Title, staving off a fantastic 10th round rally by a tough Orlando Penalba.
In an incredibly short 19 days, the event was pulled off by Nexgen Global Marketing, Elton Dharry Promotions and Jack Bharat Amerigroup Properties with Dharry focused on the fight card and Hussain and Bharat taking on the role of local and international promoters.
Bharat added, “It took a lot of effort and behind the scenes work to pull off an event of this magnitude. Elton focused on his main job, winning this fight to give him a shot at the world title here in Guyana, and Aleem and myself worked closely to ensure that we could produce a world class event and based on the outcome and feedback, we delivered!”
According to Hussain, “Despite the short notice, we were able to fulfill our obligations and create a memorable event that was broadcast live, allowing us to promote Guyana, CPL, Carnival and boxing to millions of viewers worldwide. This has set the foundation on which a strong boxing program, as desired by President Ali and Minister Ramson can now be built.”
Through the joint collaboration between Nexgen Global Marketing, Elton Dharry Promotions, Jack Bharat and the Guyana Boxing Board of Control, with full support from the government and the WBC, boxing is not only back in Guyana but it looks like it’s on the way to becoming a major sports tourism program.
Peter Abdool stated, “We have the ability to bring major fights to Guyana and with this event showing we have the ability to put on the best show, there is no reason why boxing cannot be a major tourism product and bring international attention and visitors here.”
