Dear Editor,
The government has expressed alarm over the lawless occupation of government reserves, roadside parapets and sidewalks. The Georgetown City Council has also come in for condemnation for what is perceived to be either its encouragement of these actions or its failure to take action, or both.
The Council is complicit in the disappearance of one of the few green spaces in the city. Permanent structures have been allowed to be erected along the Merriman’s Mall between Light and Cummings Streets.
Amazingly, none of the residents of that area have approached the courts to halt the construction of these permanent structures. If such actions had been attempted in more high-end wards, such as Subryanville, the courts would have already been approached.
It is also being rumoured that attempts are being made to have stalls erected on the parapets along Bourda Street, despite an injunction being in place.
The government must intervene to stop this continued lawlessness.
