Dear Editor,
We write to condemn the actions of Mr. Nirvan Singh, who allegedly slapped, spat upon and racially insulted a Black woman and police constable who was on duty at the home of his father, the former Chancellor of the Judiciary.
Sadly, this disgusting incident tells us much about how power works in our society. This is about cowardice and bullyism. It is about race and gender but it is also about class. Given the allegations, one can only conclude that Mr. Nirvan Singh harbours these feelings towards Black people – a lot of true feelings come out in anger. But he is not a foolish man. He allegedly verbally and physically abused a Black female police constable because he figured that he could get away with it. He could chase her out of his father’s yard and down the road because in his eyes, she is ordinary people, she does not matter and she cannot challenge him.
Will we let this abuse of power stand? Are the Honourable members of the Bar embarrassed by this behaviour, enough to speak out and take a stand against one of their own?
Is it because this is a woman who has been abused by a professional man that the police are not hastening to close ranks in her protection, even though she is supposedly one of them? Given that the reported behaviour is criminal, where is the police investigation and where are the charges against Mr. Nirvan Singh?
We stand in full support of the policewoman who came forward, and we applaud the lawyer who is taking her case on. If she had not taken this courageous stand to speak out, this would have been swept under the carpet.
Sincerely,
Susan Collymore
