Dear Editor,
Guyanese were disgusted by the recent conduct of an Indian attorney, who allegedly spat on and called a Black policewoman a racial slur. There was widespread condemnation by almost everyone. However, the opposition and their “lunatic fringe” social media supporters never let a tragic situation go to waste. Instantly, they sought to highlight the tragic situation through the prism of racism. Many sought to impugn the entire Indian race and instead showed their own racism, by using the racial epithet “trench crapos.”
As an Indian who does business at Bourda Market, I have been robbed and called racial slurs several times by Black perpetrators. There were never any instant outcry and rebuke of an entire race as we are now observing. One has to only pick up the daily newspapers or watch the news to observe the widespread crimes that are perpetuated by one specific race on to another.
Many law-abiding citizens are now asking, is it not time that the government keep a daily spreadsheet of all crimes that are committed by each respective race in Guyana? Asking for reciprocity in tracking of racial crimes is not racism.
Respectively submitted,
Chitrakha Persaud
