Dear Editor,
The issue of rum drinking and loud music in Guyana is more of an evolved culture in all of our society. It’s no doubt that Jamaican dub songs’ lyrics influence and promote drugs consumption and Trinidadian chutney songs glorify rum drinking to the detriment of society.
So instead of targeting Sanatana-Hindu Dharma and its leaders for this degradation and mayhem, we should be soliciting the relevant authorities to remedy these ills associated with this rum drinking and loud music culture.
Accordingly, further legislation(s) should be passed as follows:
1) Limit the number of liquor licences granted to operate rum shops, clubs and pubs in communities.
2) Shorten the opening/closing hours of these facilities.
3) Ban drinking of alcoholic beverages in public and open places.
4) Strict age limit for purchasing alcoholic beverages.
5) Increase Excise Tax rate on alcoholic beverages to 100 percent.
Of course, these measures shall act as a deterrent in some way or the other…
And, finally I’d like to end with a quote from Joseph Ratzinger (Pope Benedict XVI) ‘When every man lives without Law every man lives without Freedom’.
Truly yours,
Paul Ramrattan
