Kaieteur News – A pork-knocker was on Monday killed after a mining pit caved in at Highwood Backdam, North West District (NWD), Region One.
The dead pork-knocker has been identified as Christopher Bumbury, 58, of Pakera, Matthews Ridge, NWD.
According to police report, the dug-out mining pit which measured about 15 feet in width, 20 feet in length and 22 feet in depth collapsed and covered Bumbury.
It was reported that Bumbury and another pork-knocker identified as Hilton Ward was at the time digging gravel at the bottom of one of the walls when it collapsed on Bumbury. Ward then ran out of the pit and went for two other workmates, Paul Bumbury and Wilfred Bumbury, both of whom aided with the search for the victim.
Kaieteur News understands that it took the men 45 minutes before they discovered Bumbury’s motionless body. It was stated in the police report that no marks of violence were seen on the man’s body. On Tuesday around 13:45Hrs when Bumbury’s body arrived at the Port Kaituma District Hospital he was pronounced dead. His body is presently at the district hospital awaiting a post mortem examination.
