Dear Editor,
Recent parliamentary developments involving a sitting Minister of the Government and a lawmaker (believe it or not) have tarnished others, who were there and heard him. They cannot plead innocence of absence, the protection of distance. These four honourable daughters of Guyana, part of the PPP sorority, failed their female relatives, their female comrades in Guyana, and all females everywhere. Males, too. Most of the four manifest signs of rank captive partisanship, where their unhinged comrade is seen as pious battler in Guyana’s truth and justice wars. Nothing is expected of them, but what serves party interests only and cult leader visions only; and this is no matter how destructive either may be. But I single out the Hon. Minister of Social Protection, somebody for whom I have some regard, who has failed females when she found a safe harbour in silence, when she had to rise up, speak out, and separate herself from the chaff that is part of political life in Guyana, be it with females or males, but refused to do so.
The Minister of Social Protection has been in the vanguard of positive actions on such fronts as gender-based violence, particularly against women. She has taken steps to offer more protection to children, the abused, the weak. I have repeatedly hailed her efforts publicly, for I detect that she means well and does well. I am not one to withhold commendations when they have been earned. Similarly, I am not one to withhold difference of evaluation and conclusion from the public domain when such is the case.
I must disagree with and call out the Hon. Minister of Social Protection for being too quiet in the matter concerning her colleague in parliament. It is not only the Hon. Speaker who has made a mockery through many travesties inside the once august National Assembly; it will take eternity to recover from his blatant farces and failures. No! that colleague and much patronised comrade is one with a fetish that is found fascinating, with enslavement to postures of a twisted nature, and which all speak to that which profanes the House of the People. His kind and his ways are best suited to another type of house. They used to call them bawdy, and similar such names; I believe that he would have at home in such.
When this is considered, the Minister of whatever smeared not hated political opponents, but those women colleagues on his side, for whom he may (or may not) have some regard. In his instance, I speculate on how much shelter he would enjoy, if his words were addressed to his own. For the Hon. Minister of Social Protection to turn a blind eye, and pretend to possess a deaf ear does not accrue to her favour. At certain times, when lines are crossed, there are no comrades, only one’s conscience. I trust that Dr. Vindhya Persaud can live with herself in what is a sordid and putrid affair.
Sincerely,
GHK Lall
