Dear Editor,
A short note to thank Mr. Kissoon for his revision (though, given the tone and content of his original pieces, an apology would have sufficed) and to clarify a few points. First, my public comments in the letter columns are made as an independent individual, a citizen concerned for the future of our country. I do not speak on behalf of an institution. Second, I own shares in Guyana Publications Inc, publishers of Stabroek News.
But this does not entitle me (or any other shareholder) to speak on behalf of Stabroek News or to meddle in its editorial direction.
Both of those responsibilities rest with the Editor-in-Chief. Third, at the risk of incurring another volley of abuse from Mr. Kissoon, it is my firm view that, if political allegiance is allowed to serve as a credential or a disqualification for senior posts in the country’s institutions, we are lost.
We must hire transparently, based solely on experience and ability. The public sphere in Guyana is hyper-politicised. To make political loyalty a condition of employment is to entrench and endorse that corrosive tendency.
Similarly, public officials must be made to understand that they are there to serve the public interest, not those of the politicians.
Yours faithfully,
Isabelle de Caires
