Dear Editor,
They did it at the reading of the NRF Bill when there was that boisterous uproar in parliament, the incessant blowing of whistles then the mad rush for the mace, this was the worst display of hooliganism in the noble House ever. Parliament was reduced to a street side brawl. Now, there was a hint of disciplinary action for the miscreants but that was not just yet, so it seems that this was an incentive for the Main Opposition, who chose to continue that trend of behaviour.
I know Speaker Manzoor Nadir would like a healthy debate from both sides of the divide, so he might have delayed discipline of those members for the sake of democracy. He would have opined that everyone should have a fair chance at this democratic privilege and let the process have its normal flow. But those privileges were taken advantage of, as the Opposition took their protest to another level, they were now at an all time low.
One can protest in parliament, but it has to be done within reasonable limits. I have researched the British, Malaysian, Taiwanese Parliaments, just to name a few, where things got heated and tempers boiled over, but nothing that can compare to the lowdown, gutter crap that is evident in our Guyana Parliament; it is absolutely ludicrous and disgraceful to say the least.
The most recent of such out-blast was the alleged derogatory comment made by a government minister to one of the female members on the opposite benches. However, instead of a heckled response in kind by the female, it was the henpecked “male” from that side who was most offended by the remark. This caused him to jump to his feet and hurl expletives at the minister. The Speaker in a bid to restore law and order, requested of the Honourable Member to take his seat, but he blatantly refused and kept on talking even though he was cautioned by the Speaker to refrain. At this stage, Speaker Nadir was forced to act, calling for the suspension of that Member of Parliament.
This member has definitely crossed the line and as such, must be disciplined with a suspension. No more would we tolerate such thuggish and street brawl in parliament, this member has to understand that it is high time for this sick joke of his to come to an end.
Respectfully submitted,
Neil Adams
