Dear Editor,
Kaieteur News – We hope for the sake of the country that by default, all major infrastructure projects go to foreign companies.
They bring better quality work, technology, but most importantly, badly needed modernisation to Guyana. Along with them also comes urban planning ideas. The locally contracted roads deteriorate so quickly in these parts, be it main, or secondary roads. Roads that can barely accommodate two vehicles passing next to each other simultaneously, nevermind pavements for pedestrians, even in areas that are not heavily populated. It’s a losing proposition to award any major projects to local companies. The expected new smart hospitals are nonfunctional, without considering staff need to be kept medically current in their skills. I suppose that would mean frequent trips abroad for training.
The expectations appear high, and the new buzz word for the budget is “Transformational”. Granted the opposition would not have steered Guyana in a more progressive direction, as they have recently proven unable to govern, but importantly even unable to state their major accomplishments (That door to returning to the helm of government is permanently shut). But the budget is still in print. Guyana’s expectation to be the global leader in this, that or the other sector; is still on paper! In the era of fast moving technology and sophisticated IT workplace tools for public sector staff – it is difficult to see the country on a global map. Furthermore, the other challenge is to translate all these high hopes (on paper) into actual first class quality work, done in a timely manner by some areas of the public sector. Realistically, it’s a wait and see approach for this transition.
