Dear Editor,
The Omicron variant has arrived in Guyana. Why? There is an influx of travellers from regions where it surges. Several such travellers are in isolation in this country.
However, the honourable Minister of Health seems to be asleep on the job. He has informed the pubic that it is too early to test for this variant. The Minister has got to be clueless and irresponsible. The Minister must know that it is never too early to test for this variant or any other. Such testing drives discovery and saves lives in the clinics. The researchers in South Africa never felt that it was too early to test for mutations and as such they have identified the Omicron strain.
Of course, it would be beneficial to correlate the effectiveness of a particular COVID-19 vaccine, i.e., Sputnik, Sinopharm with each variant. This would arm us with much needed knowledge to better fight this virus in our clinics. Of course, we are unable to accomplish this feat because we do not have the vision to even own the gene sequencing technology. It is hard to believe that such unprogressive dynamics exists in a country with incredible natural wealth.
Sincerely,
Annie Baliram
