Dear President Ali
Like many Guyanese I love Guyana, and want what is best for my country.
Kaieteur News – It is vital for emerging economies to realise their aspirations for a better quality of life. It is vital for the mother who hopes that the water coming out of the pipe is clean – and available – so her children do not get sick; for the informal settlement dweller who wants his children to study but cannot afford an electricity bill; for farmers who need all-weather roads and reliable shipping to get their goods to market.
It is especially vital to have proper drainage in a country below sea level so that houses, farms and streets will not be flooded. These should be the first concerns of our leaders and government for a better Guyana, so that all Guyanese everywhere will benefit from lower electricity and other utility bills thus easing the burden of the poor and destitute while at the same time enjoying its fruits.
Guyana is in a deplorable condition. The road to and from the Cheddi Jagan International Airport is a death trap riddled with all types of unsightly paraphernalia along the sides of the roadway making it extremely dangerous. Given the unique challenges of its geography, perhaps no other country has a deeper need for reliable and high quality infrastructure than Guyana. From air and marine transport links, to good roads, telecommunications and energy generation, all are needed, for the provision of reliable services and to enable local businesses to grow and expand.
Tourism can be a profitable business but only if the country is clean and attractive to foreigners. It doesn’t matter how many casinos and hotels are built.
We have been blessed with an opportunity to make Guyana “The Gem of the Carribbean”. Let’s not look a gift horse in the mouth and squander away the money on less important things. I cannot stress enough the very first thing this country needs to do with the “Oil Money” is to invest in infrastructure. There is an enormous need to invest in infrastructure for job creation and economic growth in Guyana. Infrastructure is the key that motivates a nation to bigger and better things from which all Guyana will eventually benefit. One feels a sense of pride when one’s country seems to be flourishing that instills its citizens to do more. It’s like the domino effect.
May God guide you and all they that serve this country as you all embark on the road to prosperity for Guyana in the New Year.
Yours truly,
Gloria Holder
