FINA’s World swimming C’ships in Abu Dhabi
Patrice Mahaica sets Nat 50m BS record, Fowler swims PB
By Sean Devers
Kaieteur News – History was made yesterday when 15-year-old Olympian Aleka Persaud, swimming in Guyana’s final race at FINA’s World swimming C’ships in Abu Dhabi which commenced
last Thursday, became the first Guyanese female to ever do 26 seconds in the 50Meters free style. On Saturday Olympian Andrew Fowler swam a Personal Best in the 50 butterfly with a time of 25.95 while Patrice Mahaica set a new National Record for the 50 backstroke; swimming a time of 32.91 to break the old record for the 50 backstroke of 32.99 set by Onika George on August 15, 2014.
“Yes we’re done and I’m very proud of the performances of all Four swimmers…the girls have broken two records each and both boys did PB’S in their two events each,” said Coach Sean Baksh yesterday from Abu Dhabi.
The Orca Swim Club Coach and one the National Coaches, Baksh, is pleased with the performances of his charges and feels there were many ‘positives’ from this trip to the UAE.
“The exposure is always good especially for the young ones… this was Raekwon’s first major international meet and Patrice is now getting to spread her wings. Aleka has a little more experience but she’s seeing that she can compete with
the best and that’s good motivation.
I think that ending the year on a high note like this can motivate the other swimmers and GASA to take swimming to another level come next year,” concluded Coach Baksh.
This is the last overseas tournament for the year for Guyana and Team Guyana is expected to return home on Wednesday.
