Women’s Super 16 Festival
Kaieteur News – The Bartica All Stars prevailed over their counterparts from Essequibo when the GFF/NAWF Women’s Super 16 Festival continued at the Bartica Community Centre Ground on Sunday night last.
Urged on a by a large gathering of their home fans, especially their young friends and family members who were screaming support throughout the encounter, the Bartica ladies rallied to a 2-1 win on sudden death penalty kicks after a 0-0 tie in regulation time and a 1-1 stalemate after the first five kicks from the penalty mark.
It was a bruising encounter between two sides that are still learning the game and competing in this historic competition, the first of its kind for women at year-end. It’s being held under the theme, “We Rise Against Domestic Violence”.
The energy and enthusiasm displayed by both teams made up for their lack of experience as they kept the attention of all in the ground on the pitch. There were a few close encounters at each end of the field but the goalkeepers kept the tension at high pitch since they thwarted the efforts of the scorers.
Regulation time of 90 plus minutes, along with the 15 minutes (7 ½ each) of extra time failed to produce any goals. After the first five kicks from the penalty mark, each team had scored once and missed four chances apiece.
In sudden death kicks, Bartica buried their shot but the Essequibo players sent her shot sailing over the cross bar to send the Essequibo players, Technical Staff and fans into a frenzy as they secured victory.
The win has earned the excited young ladies a date with the experienced Police FC Team on Christmas night at the same venue. (Franklin Wilson)
