Dear Editor,
The National Congress of Women (NCW), the Women’s Arm of the People’s National Congress Reform (PNCR) joined with all persons worldwide in recognizing 25th November 2021 as “International Day of the Elimination of Violence against Women.”
The 25th of November 2021 launched the 16 days of activism which will conclude on the 10th December, 2021, “International Human Rights Day”.
The National Congress of Women (NCW) joins the world in calling for an end to the various forms of violence meted out to our women, under the theme “Orange the World, End Violence against Women Now!”
Violence against women exists in every country in the world, as a pervasive violation of human rights and a major impediment to achieving gender equality. Such violence is unacceptable, whether perpetrated by family members or strangers, in the public or private sphere, in peacetime or in times of conflict. Violence against women continues to be an obstacle to achieving equality, development, peace as well as to the fulfillment of women and girls’ human rights. All in all, the promise of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) – to leave no one behind – cannot be fulfilled without putting an end to violence against women and girls.
COVID 19 has worsened the situation and many more are affected during these terrible times.
Domestic Violence, as it is now widely understood, not only has a negative impact on children, but ultimately render the family unit dysfunctional and prevents it from carrying out its role in the society of being a source of nurturing and the incubator of values so necessary for the survival of society.
As the 16 days of activism commences, it is necessary for Guyana to do its best to protect its mothers, its daughters and its sons.
The National Congress of Women says END DOMESTIC VIOLENCE NOW!
Regards,
National Congress of Women
