Dear Editor,
Kaieteur News – The above caption brings great pain to my heart and indeed to most sane and patriotic Guyanese regardless of their political camps.
To imagine that some people of this country also known as thieves and bandits will go to the extent to possibly decimate lives. This could happen in the case of flooding, caused by the theft of winches for sluices. These sluices were built hundreds of years ago in some cases to support our safety, from flooding by rains and waters, so we get water out. Also to bring in water with which certain species of seafood would also enter the various canals travelling hundreds sometimes thousands of miles linking up with other canals of agriculture and of GuySuCo.
Having lost control of winches, an entire area could become inundated or flooded, water cannot go out and water cannot come in. The authorities having lost total control for the time being. Of course, we know our government: truly a people’s government which cares for the citizens of the country, the security of this country, will do all they can to ensure these kinds of thefts and destruction, which I refer to as economic sabotage and economic treason.
The laws of this country need to be seriously amended, not only for choke and robbers, and bandits attacking people in their homes but anyone involved in these economic types of sabotage. Agriculture is the backbone of our nation as it pertains to food production for peasants and large-scale farmers. Much of it brings in foreign exchange and excites the local economy, while providing economic stability and food resources.
The fishing industry is sometimes operated by ordinary people who depend upon catching fish as a resource, and the people depending on the fisherman for a fresh reliable supply of seafood protein.
I call upon our government to maximise the penalties possible, by new enactment of laws. They should also look at the possibility of offering rewards to these kinds of people. If the value of the item is three hundred thousand dollars, you offer a reward of three hundred thousand dollars. If it is one million dollars, you offer a reward of one million dollars. So that even their own friends, families or neighbours using the grapevine system of communication will want to expose them. These informers must be well protected by the authorities as they can operate more and more clandestinely to help capture more and more thieves.
Therefore, it can move even beyond those involved in the theft of agricultural equipment such as winches, batteries and pumps. It must be noted that it is not unusual for one set of people who are moving from area to area stealing these winches, pipes and motors that pump water. My heart truly bleeds! I am sad and depressed that our own people will steal life saving equipment out of mere dishonesty, deceit and wickedness, while at the same time causing grave destruction to the lives of our farmers and to our country.
Sincerely,
Roshan Khan
