Dear Editor,
Kaieteur News – After reading Freddie Kissoon’s November 12th column titled: “Guyana cannot be like this, Mr. President”; please allow me to add my comments.
I would suggest that President Ali, or his delegate, visit any Government entity, including the hospitals, and he would see the long lines of people waiting to be serviced. Kissoon said that the “system” is to be blamed for staff inaction to public concerns and frustrations. While I am a firm believer that people are the cause of most compromised, inefficient and ineffective systems, I would suggest that President Ali create an Office; or an Initiative, the mission of which is to cut through red tape so that the public can be properly served in a timely manner; one role of that office would be to receive citizens/public complaints and to generate solutions to such complaints. That office/initiative must be led by a professional with international experience and of the highest integrity, but I do not think that a lawyer or judge should hold that position. This office/initiative must not be a replication of the Ombudsman Office. The office/initiative can be called “Office for Quality Public Service”. Guyana must not be a country noted for lines, links and possible corruption relating to public service. The time is now for President Ali to take note of Kissoon’s comments and certainly to take bold action.
Thank you,
Fizul Rahim
