“It’s where I get to express my art and love for food. I’m the type of person that loves to see a colourful plate and taste the herbs and spices to give my taste buds a grand fusion of tastes.”

Being the owner of a business was not something that 22-year-old Sheneeza Tiffany McCurdy had envisioned for her life.
In fact, what she had envisioned over a year ago was nothing close to what it is today. She is currently the owner of a popular fast-food joint called ‘Royal Lucy’s Grill & Juice’, a business she co-owns with her mother, Shonette Paul-Hussain, and fiancé, Christopher Ogleton. This business venture, which has been catching the attention of many food lovers, was officially opened in April 2020, but was registered in March this year. In an interview with Kaieteur News, McCurdy said that if it was not for the many words of encouragement from her fiancé and mother, the nation would not have heard about ‘Royal Lucy’s Grill & Juice’ or known what this cuisine-talented woman was capable of. To sum it up, the two, mother and fiancé, is the inspiration behind the establishment. “I remember vividly back in April 2020, he (Ogleton) asked me what I have a passion for and I told him cooking and making juice. He told me then alright, I’m giving you a week to come up with a name for a business,” she recalled.
Within a day she was able to formulate a name which caught her fiancé’s attention. “I pitched Royal Lucy’s Juice to him and he was like that’s catchy and we went with it not thinking it would have gotten so big, so fast,” she shared. Her passion for cooking and making local beverages all started way back when she once pursued home economics in school. McCurdy related that back in 2018, her mother would prepare food and sell at the Tucville Secondary School, and she would make the local beverages to go along with her mother’s cuisine.
Selling the beverages at that time was her way of paying for needed classes. For McCurdy, delving into the cooking arena turned out to be not just a business venture but rather a kind of “therapy” for her. “It’s where I get to express my art and love for food. I’m the type of person that loves to see a colourful plate and taste the herbs and spices to give my taste buds a grand fusion of tastes,” the young woman added. It is with this passion and talent that she has been gaining the attention of many persons recently. But one challenge, she highlighted during her interview, is when customers call at the very last minute to cancel their orders. At times it can be frustrating, she noted.
Regarding the global pandemic, she said that it has had a positive impact given the nature of the business. Local fast food and catering services have been taking the food industry by storm since the onset of the pandemic, as many persons are now relying on them. When the pandemic first started, many establishments such as restaurants, indoor and outdoor dining, were forced to close their doors for months, and because of this, many catering and delivery services came on stream. When asked what the ultimate goal is moving forward, our featured young entrepreneur said that “we are planning to open a restaurant where food lovers can come and dine. There is still a lot more we can do, and this, what we are doing, is just the beginning.”
McCurdy is of the firm belief that young businessmen and women are important toward the development of the country because with whatever field of business they choose to get into, they are in some way inspiring others. “I think young entrepreneurs play a major role in our society by creating jobs for others as well as inspiring other young entrepreneurs,” she commented. She suggested that in order to boost small businesses locally, the relevant authorities should help pave the way for persons so they can access grants and loans which would be of great assistance in helping them get their undiscovered business ideas off the ground.
