“As a young entrepreneur I know for a fact having a business and being able to be independent is inspiring to others.”

Kaieteur News – The impact of the COVID-19 pandemic has been far-reaching. While there have been far too many individuals who have lost their lives to the disease, there are others who have suffered through the loss of their employment.
Among those who have been so impacted is 21-year-old Doniellie Vanessa Handy. But, instead of merely reaping a crop of lemons, Handy decided that it was time to make the sweetest lemonade possible.
Today she is an emerging young entrepreneur who is the founder and sole owner of a local hair-styling business which operates under the name ‘Hair by Vanessa’.
Being her own boss was always ingrained in her anatomy for she recalls, quite vividly too, that it was difficult having to work for someone else and even harder to stay at home and not be productive. “I inspired myself because being at home unemployed due to the pandemic was a bit challenging, and it made me realise too, that working with others really was not cutting it for me,” she related
So, with an affinity for the beauty and hair-styling industry, she decided it was just the right fit for her to utilise her skills to build her own business venture. “Since I was already a fan of doing hair, I just bought products and it took off from there,” Handy revealed.
Her hard work and skills set have surely paid off, since the services she offers are in constant demand. This is reflected through the growth of her business and the recognition it has been attracting thus far. Since her business took off in August last year, her support base, she said, has been unprecedented. She is especially grateful to her mother and boyfriend who she said are the ones who have been there helping her along the way.
She noted that although it was the pandemic that pushed her into the realm of entrepreneurship it has not proven to be a challenge to her business. Instead, since launching her business, her hair appointment numbers have been increasing.
It has however, been a challenge to not have a dedicated location to offer her services. Moreover, she noted, “My long-term goal is to expand my business and open another branch to reach a wider market.”
Our featured young entrepreneur is of the firm belief that young businessmen and women have the responsibility to move the country forward. Regardless of the field of business they choose, young entrepreneurs she noted, are in some way inspiring others to go after their own business ventures as well. “As a young entrepreneur, I know for a fact having a business and being able to be independent is inspiring to others.” she said.
Handy thinks a lot can be done too to help more young people achieve their dream of becoming entrepreneurs. With the relevant authorities hiring business ambassadors and mentors to guide young people, it would surely assist them with the necessary marketing skills/tools that would help to promote their work, she related.
