Dear Editor,
I note a public announcement in the media that roads will be closed off to facilitate the electronic lighting of a symbolic diya. Is this done to appease Hindus? If government is trying to send a message not to worry about them being sidelined while other groups are favoured, then it is sadly mistaken. Hindus note their marginalisation in awarding of government contracts and employment at various Ministries. They are noticing and are upset.
Since August 2020, a lopsided quantity of government contracts has been awarded to contractors who are Muslims. A large number of new contractors who never performed any kind of work in private or the state have obtained government contracts. Several of them lack the ability and capacity to perform any work; they get the contract reportedly as a result of their religious connection and then sub-contract to others. Traditional contractors who have done work for the Government for many years are being bypassed in favour of new contractors, almost all of whom are Muslims. At the same time, traditional Muslim contractors have seen their contracts multiplied. Is it a payback for the campaign funds for the last elections? And what about Hindus and Christians and other groups that donated to the campaign? Are they not entitled to a fair number of contracts?
Hindus and Christians are keenly looking on at who are getting contracts. Hindus will not be fooled by a gesture of facilitating a Diwali event. Why is the VP closing his eyes to Hindu marginalisation? What are: Drs. Vindhya, Frank, Anil Nandlall, Indar, Anand, Nigel, Sonia, Ramson, and others doing about Hindu marginalisation? Hindus are generally peaceful and passive, as exemplified in India and fostered by the Mahatma. Hindus will await the next election cycle; it will come quickly. Those who betray Hindus will pay a price. Recall what happened in 2011 and 2015!
Yours truly,
Balram Gangadeen
