Can the Minister offer free PCR tests as well?

Dear Editor,

Guyana’s public health system has failed the Guyanese populace in ways too numerous to mention; but I will be stressing on only one today as it is indeed stressful.
Our government had declared on a few occasions that vaccination is not mandatory. However, unvaccinated persons seeking to transact business in public buildings must present a negative PCR test from an approved testing site. This move which was gazetted resulted in almost every employer around the nation having to require of their staff, either a vaccine book or a negative PCR test to access their place of employ. The heart wrecking and frustrating strategy of the government through the public health system is that none of the governmental testing sites are allowed to test unvaccinated persons who by request of the government, need a PCR test in order to work. This type of manipulation is evil.
I am proud to say that I am unvaccinated but I am sure of my COVID-19 status. I do not discourage anyone from taking the vaccine because every citizen has a personal decision to make and must I say, the “slave/massa era” has been long abolished. I have done about 10 PCR tests at different public testing sites, all of which were for contact tracing; and all of which were accepted by every government organisation and elsewhere that I have visited including my work place. However, recently I sought to acquire a PCR test from a couple of public health testing sites as required by my work place and they all denied me on the same basis: “we are not authorised to test you for work purposes.” In fact, the doctor at Herstelling Health Centre said in no uncertain terms, “You have to go pay for that. Not here”.
In a month like this where we recognise mental health nationally, I wonder if our health authorities take mental health seriously and if they understand that unnecessarily frustrating hardworking people that they refuse to pay substantially can lead to mental illness.
I wish to enlighten and charge our authorities to review this manipulative strategy to get every citizen vaccinated. After all, is it not comforting to be in the company of someone that you “know” is COVID negative? We must face the facts, I can take the vaccine and cease getting tested regularly and contract the virus and pass it on. So, why fight me if I choose to be tested every week as is required.
I wish to close by appealing to the Honourable Minister of Health, Frank Anthony, you are administering free vaccine, please administer free COVID test as well.
