To honour GT Mayor who turns 30 today
Mayor for the City of Georgetown, the youthful Ubraj Narine will celebrate his 30th birthday today and the Organising Committee of former Mayor Hamilton Greene which includes Lennox Arthur and David Erskine have planned their annual Mayors Cup tournament in his honour.
The Inter-Ward/Inter Village knock-out 32-team Mayor’s Cup Football tournament will be played in adherence to covid-19 protocols for the smooth running and safety of officials, players and patrons.
Due to covid-19 Pandemic, the tournament is scheduled to commence in December and will run until February, 2022. It will be contested at the GFC, Den Amstel and Buxton Community Centre Grounds.
The games will be 11-a-side but instead of the usual 90 minutes, will be played for 60 minutes and go kicks from the penalty mark in case of a draw to arrive at a winner. The first game is scheduled to start at 18:00hrs since all three venues are equipped with flood lights.
The 32-teams with come from the City, West Demerara, Berbice, East Coast and East Bank with East Coast fielding the most teams while East Bank has the least, three. The contesting teams are: Charlestown, Bourda Blues, Road Warriors and Tucville (GT), Den Amstel, Stewartville, Pouderoyen, Uitvlugt, Sara Lodge, Crane, West Side Spartans and Bagotville (W/Dem), Paradise, Mahaicony, Airy Hall and New Amsterdam (B’ce), Golden Grove, BV, Victoria, Ann’s Grove, Mahaica, Melanie, Friendship, Diamond, Turkeyen, Liliendaal, Plaisance, Annandale, Brush Dam (East Coast), Timheri, Agricola and Mocha (East Bank).
