Kaieteur News – A 9-year-old is dead following an accident that occurred on the Islington Public Road yesterday morning at approximately 9:00 am. The child has been identified as Carleisa Lewis of lot 40 Islington, East Berbice, Corentyne (EBC). She was a student of Overwinning Primary School.
Kaieteur News understands that the driver involved in the accident is in police custody and has since told police that on the day in question, he was heading north along the western drive lane while driving PJJ 2394 when Lewis ran from east to west and into the path of his vehicle.
The child immediately came into contact with the front of the vehicle, fell to the ground and sustained injuries to her body and head. She was picked up by her sister Drusila Lewis who was nearby and taken to the New Amsterdam Public hospital by the driver involved in the accident.
She was pronounced dead on arrival and her body is presently at the New Amsterdam Hospital mortuary awaiting a post mortem examination. A breathalyzer test was conducted on the driver of PJJ 2394 and there was no alcohol found in his system.
Investigations are ongoing.
