— observes COVID-19 protocols
Kaieteur News – Like most Caribbean territories, rum is an intrinsic part of Guyanese culture and heritage. As such, it is not out of the ordinary for countries like Guyana to host festivals celebrating the unique taste and history behind the fermented substance brewed from sugarcane. Last weekend, Guyanese were treated to such an event. The Guyana Rum Festival was successfully held, for the second consecutive year, in keeping with the protocols of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Virtual aspects of the festival included a mix off and cocktail competition which was hosted on Facebook by Digicel Guyana’s D music and radio host Allana Bose. By Sunday, the rum festival held an all-white secret garden brunch experience.
The all white secret garden brunch served as the crest of the festival was an in person in event which featured tight security at the entrance of the gate to ensure that those entering were vaccinated in keeping with the COVID-19 protocols.
Businessman and organizer of the event, Yonnick David told Kaieteur News that he is pleased with how attendees complied with the requirements. According to David “The Guyana Rum Fest” committee had to secure the approval of the COVID-19 taskforce before hosting the social event.
“We are very pleased with how things turned out. We had persons who went to get vaccinated just to attend the event,” he said. Referencing the great reviews that the event has garnered so far, David and his business partner Nkosi Bruce—the visionaries behind the Guyana Rum Fest promotions are hoping to make the activity an annual one.
He explained that the idea is to promote Guyana’s rum products and display the country’s rich culture particularly as it relates to sugar cane production. According to David, the event has already shown promise of being a tourist attraction. He explained that the event secured the support of the government, and there were plans to make it an annual event which will attract tourism.
“We see it becoming a calendar event like Mashramani and other activities that Guyanese look forward to and so we are working on making it an annual one.” David noted too, that despite some of the activities being held virtually many persons are still logging on and participating.
While, he disclosed that there are plans for similar activities to take place, the businessman noted that “the pandemic has presented a serious learning curve,” for all social activities.
“All social activities had to be seriously thought out and planned properly to protect the people with Covid-19 still going around.”
David noted nonetheless that “people still want to be entertained and therefore promoters can work with the authorities to offer similar incentives that will help promote vaccination.”
