Kaieteur News – Jaleel Henry, a 22-year-old driver of the motorcar that was involved in a fatal accident last Saturday night at the Farm New Housing Scheme Public Road, East Bank Demerara, that claimed the life of 23-year-old pedestrian, Ishwar Mohan, of Lot 163, Second Street, Success, East Coast Demerara, was charged with failure to stop after an accident, and failure to render assistance. He pleaded not guilty to both charges and was released on $20,000 bail each.
Kaieteur News had reported that Henry was travelling north along the western side of the said road at a fast rate of speed and ran over an intoxicated Mohan, who was lying on the western side of the road. As a result, Mohan was dragged some distance; Henry failed to stop, but instead went to the Providence Police Station and reported the matter.
Mohan was picked up in an unconscious condition by the police and public-spirited citizens and taken to the Diamond Diagnostic Centre, where he was pronounced dead on arrival by a doctor on duty. The post mortem examination revealed the cause of death to be multiple crush injuries.
Subsequently, the body was later handed over to relatives for cremation.
A breathalyzer test was conducted on Henry, and no trace of alcohol was detected in his breath.
Henry is slated to return to court on September 27, 2021.
