Aug 30, 2021 Letters
Dear Editor,
Writing in the KN of 25th August, 2021, Mr. Eusi Kwayana says he is discussing constitutional issues, but in reality it was a defence of the PNC Opposition Leader not to recognise the lawfully elected PPP/C government and President Dr. Irfaan Ali after the March 2, 2020, elections.
Mr. Kwayana readily concedes that “True, the President has not called on the Leader of the Opposition to make obeisance to him as victor in the General Elections of 2020. He has called for an open and formal acknowledgment of his victory.”
What’s wrong with that?. Mr. Kwayana instead writes that “This call has no basis in the Constitution and it goes far beyond the excesses written into the Constitution, as imposed in 1980”.
What Mr. Kwayana does not realize is, it does not have to be written in the Constitution for the President to be so recognized. But common sense says that the government of the day has to be recognized for you to be doing business with it. Mr. Kwayana is famous for his claim to not know what transpired during the 2020 rigged elections when the whole world knew what was happening in Guyana. Now he is making pronouncement on the Opposition leader’s refusal to recognise the PPP/C government.
Mr Kwayana never fails to surprise Guyanese. Like clockwork, he invokes his arch enemy Dr. Cheddi Jagan in his diatribe to make his point. Nothing for him is complete unless Dr. Jagan is invoked. Conscious that he is a 20th century antique operating in the 21st century, Mr. Kwayana reveals his irrelevance when he tells us that “when President Irfaan Ali assumed office, especially as Guyana’s youngest President, many of us felt that there was a chance for the old garbage to be dumped. Could he be referring to himself?
Yet when President Dr. Irfaan Ali, “after taking the oath of office, declared that he saw himself as, and intended to be, everybody’s President” Mr. Kwayana incorrectly writes “ No previous President of Guyana had ever made such a declaration”. In fact during his latter years Mr. Burnham decreed he be addressed as the “Comrade leader” which gave him paramountancy with his party. Many believe that Mr. Kwayana has changed. I for one do not. A leopard doesn’t change his spots no matter how much he tries..
Yours truly,
Sultan Mohamed
