Dear Editor,
Mr. Sean Ori writes that “a free and impartial media plays an important role in sustaining Democracy” (Aug. 26). That is absolutely correct. He calls for the privatisation of the state media. I endorse his view on both counts! But a private media is not necessarily ‘free’ of government control or ‘more objective and balanced’ than a state media.
As an illustration, Ori should read a private media published from Ruimveldt. He will find this private newspaper is more sycophantic than the Chronicle in promoting the incumbent government; it does not carry any critique of the government, its ministers, or friends of the PPP. The Chronicle at least carries some opposition related news and ‘fair’ critiques of the government and officials; the Chronicle is far more objective and balanced than the Ruimveldt paper. Ruimveldt paper is sycophancy at its best; the publisher, advisor, editor make no apology for their pro-government position.
I support privatisation. Any private media should operate along the lines of Kaieteur News.
Yours truly,
Edward Burrowes
