Kaieteur News – The Essequibo Cricket Board is upset and furious about the omission of Sheldon Charles from the group of Guyanese players who attended the Cricket West Indies Inc trials to short list a squad for the ICC Under 19 World Cup next year.
A release from the ECB stated that it is evident that the GCB continues to treat Essequibo with scant respect, for not a single Essequibian was in their eyes, good enough to merit selection.“How could Sheldon Charles from the village of Lima on the Essequibo Coast, who was born on November 23, 2002, not be considered? This youngster represented Guyana two years at the Under 15 level, was the MVP in the second year and was selected to represent the West Indies on the tour to England which eventually did not come off.”
Sheldon also represented Guyana twice at the Under 17 level, being the MVP during the second year with the most runs and most wickets in the tournament.
Cricket West Indies Inc was so impressed with Sheldon Charles that in 2019 they sent personnel to Guyana to look at him.
“The GCB is perpetuating the same crime that they are accusing the WICB of that is, ignoring our talented players. Even if he was forgotten when the initial four players were submitted to the CWI Inc he should have been drafted in when the request to submit an additional four players was granted,” the release stated.
“Our member on the Selection Committee made representation but he was out-voted by the other selectors. And to add insult to injury, a member of the GCB recently called Sheldon and sympathized with him, but we deem that not as sympathy but condolence because they are killing the youngster’s career. We hope that all the cricket knowledgeables are watching and taking note as we expect more of the same and even worse to come from this GCB.”
