Kaieteur News – As the economy continues to evolve, a lot of ideas are being introduced and many are being brought to life.

Contributing to this, are many young men and women in business in our society today. Though we continue to face unprecedented challenges due to the COVID-19 pandemic, we have over the months seen many businesses being launched by young ambitious individuals. Today, we bring into the spotlight a young woman who during the pandemic launched not only one but two businesses of her own. Samira Duncan, a University of Guyana student, is the founder and owner of ‘Savoir Hair’ which caters to the needs of all hair types and ‘Auraspace’ a graphics and designs business. The Bishops’ High School graduate, is an individual who does not hesitate to go after the things she puts her mind to. Already she has diplomas in computer science and psychology and has plans to pursue her masters in psychology, an area she is passionate about.

She is equally passionate about her business ventures. Savoir Hair, which is a natural, non-artificial hair product brand, she revealed, was birthed from an old family hair remedy that her mother has been making for years. “Since she started, we have never stopped using it and it never fails to produce amazing results with our hair. As my friends were constantly asking what I use in my hair, we decided that we could also share it with Guyana, so everyone can also have healthy hair,” she related. The move to make these products available for persons with hair issues, she said, was a good one, since the feedback, thus far, has been amazing. Turning her attention to her other business venture, Duncan recalled that she always had a passion for designing but never paid much attention to it until recently when she decided to launch “Auraspace” with some of her friends. Apart from putting their creative skills to good use, this business was established to bring about extra income for them. According to Duncan, as time goes by, she is learning new techniques that would not only make her work look better but of a high quality as well. With immense support from family members and friends, Duncan was able to muster up the needed courage to take a place in the business arena. Moving forward, her ultimate goal is to expand her businesses. “That way, I can easily provide for my parents and also help provide jobs and encouragement for my friends,” she asserted. Additionally, her aim is to eventually make ‘Savoir Hair’ a worldwide brand and to successfully market ‘Aurascape’ using social media. With continued exposure, the 24-year-old is convinced that her businesses will continue to evolve. Just like many others, Duncan is of the belief that young entrepreneurs have what it takes to move the country forward.
“They have the ability to work and display their skills, they have the ability to introduce new styles and new technologies to Guyana, to really push Guyana forward,” she related, even as she pointed to the use of avenues such as YouTube to gain “extra knowledge” to help make a business better. The young woman believes too that the government can do a lot to promote small businesses but the makers behind these businesses, she said, can do much more individually to realise real success. “Regardless of what the government can do for you, it’s a lot more beneficial to learn and try to get your stuff done for yourself, making the right connections and improving for yourself. Self-development is key,” she confidently asserted.
