“My inspiration came from my great grandmother who taught me the trick of the trade… she was regarded as the best in the community.”

Kaieteur News – Young entrepreneurs are not only helping to build our country by bringing their business ideas to life but they are showing us that anything can be accomplished if you set your mind to it.
One such individual who is on such a path is 23-year-old Oniesha Duke, a nurse employed with New Vision Lab.
Not only is Duke a nurse but she is also the proud and sole proprietor of “Niesha Tasty Treats,” a business which started its operation in 2017. The young entrepreneur told Kaieteur News that last March her business was officially branded and properly marketed and these worked well in promoting it.
The business, which provides treats such as homemade ice creams and donuts, came about after she learned the trade from a relative. “My inspiration came from my great grandmother who taught me the trick of the trade…she was regarded as the best in the community,” the young lady related.
In addition to promoting her business every third week of each month, Duke’s business sees her offering her catering services to occasions such as parties for birthdays, weddings, anniversaries and other special events.
Appreciative of the support she received to promote the business, Duke said, “I must say my customers are my business backbone.”
While many of our featured entrepreneurs endured challenges such as financial strain or lack of support, for this young woman the weather posed the greatest challenge when trying to get her products delivered to customers. The weather over the past months had caused countrywide flooding and the operation of some businesses was affected. Although impacted, Duke said that she always examined alternative ways in meeting her customers’ needs. As for the COVID-19 pandemic, it has affected her business more on an efficiency level due to the required guidelines. According to the young proprietor, she is at a stage where she is gathering as much sanitation products and safety gears in order to keep, not only herself, but also the customers protected from the virus.
As her business continues to blossom, Duke’s future plan is to expand the business, which will be able to provide services for persons in other Regions of the country.
Being young in business, the nurse said that she sees herself “as a mentor, as an influence for those thinking of owning a business.” To this end, she thinks that in order to boost small businesses, the availability of small loans or grants should be awarded to entrepreneurs to help fund their new ideas and vision. More so, sessions on business management and tactics to help guide entrepreneurs, she pointed out, could be a sound boost.
Convinced that small businesses are crucial in our society, the 23-year-old noted that “small businesses are the shoulder of our modern day economy.”
