Kaieteur News – For 22-year-old Guyanese Featherweight Keevin Allicock it was not the performance he was hoping for as he was out-boxed by Miguel Alexy De Cruz from the Dominica Republic yesterday in the Tokyo Olympics to lose by a unanimous verdict in the preliminary round of the Boxing competition.
The Guyanese failed to score with any meaningful shots as the more experienced 25-year-old Dom. Rep. pugilist ranked number 7 in his division, demonstrated excellent defence and good use of the ring.
In April 2019 in Nicaragua, Allicock conceded a controversial ‘Walk Over’ to Miguel Alexy De Cruz in the semi-finals of the Pan Am Games Qualifiers due to ‘inappropriate attire’. But yesterday, Allicock, the Caribbean Bantamweight Champion, known for his lightning fast jabs, opted the fight at middle and close range but his shots to the body of the taller De Cruz were well defended.
De Cruz also failed to land any big blows but executed more scoring shots and demonstrated good evasive tactics when Allicock tried to attack his man, to impress all five judges. In the opening round both boxers looked to figure out the tactics of each other with Allicock, ranked 19 in world, trying to be the more aggressive of two.
De Cruz counter-attacked with some good shots towards to end of the round which seemed closer than the judges scores indicated. Both boxers qualified for the biggest multi sports event in the world due to their rankings.
Round two saw Allicock moving forward but De Cruz countered with shots to the mid-section and defended well when the Guyanese went the body with shots of his own with De Cruz again getting the verdict of all the judges.
The third and final round saw Allicock looking to attack at close range but De Cruz evaded most of them, dancing around the ring as Allicock chased his man looking for a knock-out to end his best round of the contest.
However, it was too little too late even as one of the five judges give Allicock the round. Despite De Cruz being cut above his left eye from an accidental head butt the boxer from the Dominican Republic dashed the hopes of Guyana getting its second medal in Boxing since Mike Parris’ bronze in Moscow in 1980.
