Dear Editor,
I have been following with interest the reports from the Scoping Meetings being convened by the Government, through the EPA, and ExxonMobil on the gas-to-shore project. There are more questions than answers regarding this project.
While not committing to a feasibility study, mention was made by Vice President Jagdeo that this project is a “no brainer” while at the same time alluding to several studies that are to be done, including geophysical, geotechnical and environmental assessments.
On the latter, the EPA was asked pointedly who are the consultants doing the Environmental Impact Assessment for the gas-to-energy project but did not provide a response.
Since this project is being funded by the government of Guyana, can information be provided as to who are doing these various studies, has there been public tenders, who are the awardees? And will these reports be made public?
I do hope the Transparency International, Guyana, EITI, and other bodies that are expected to be vigilant about transparency and accountability are taking note.
Yours sincerely,
Shawn Gittens
