Dear Editor,
Your paper’s revelation yesterday that the KN is under constant attack by forces trying to shut down the online version of the paper is quite disturbing. Mr. Glenn Lall and KN had been a strong bastion and defender of our democracy. It has done the same kind of investigative reporting regardless of which party is in government. It is a true “Guardian of Democracy.” The only ones to fear KN’s work and who would delight in its demise would be the major parties, and the oil interests. If the enemies succeed, then all Guyana loses.
What the KN is doing is fighting for the poor people of Guyana to get a better deal from oil, and exposing corruption where it is found, is what the Opposition should be doing, the Churches/temples/mosques should be doing, the Civic society groups should be doing, and all those tiny parties that mushroomed during the last election should be doing. Unfortunately, those so called “Guardians of Democracy” died so quickly bought out by senior counsel awards and appointments to Boards, that they became dumb. (Three of the tiny party leaders blocked me from their Facebook pages when I asked them why they are not calling for renegotiation of the oil contract). So, the only consistent voice “standing in the gap” for the whole nation is the indomitable, fearless Mr. Glenn Lall and the KN. They have more moral courage than all the so-called religious leaders put together. In my view, the KN is doing God’s will, and I am drawing a parallel to what the preacher said, “2 Timothy 3:12 –Yea, all that will live godly in Christ shall suffer persecution.” The Preacher said one way you can tell if you are doing the right thing is by the Opposition you get from the devil(s).
I remember how some folks shot up the KN some time ago killing workers, and there was that famous phone call from a government minister to a KN reporter that was recorded. Mr. GHK Lall, a columnist and letter writer, has also revealed there may be organised attempts to threaten him, and he feels unsafe. However, truth always triumphs over evil in the end, and those who think they can silence Mr. Glenn Lall, KN, and GHK Lall should think again. The KN is a fearless paper, no wonder it became Guyana’s largest, most trusted paper. The sister paper Stabroek News is also great, and it had faced opposition too in the early days.
Now would be a good time for the Guyana Press Association, the Bar Associations, other media houses, and others to speak up in support of press freedom. Mr. Glenn Lall, your message is getting through to the people at home and abroad. We hear you loud and clear. We encourage you and the entire staff of the newspaper to continue to stand strong and stand tall, because God and the masses of people are on your side. We thank you for what you do.
Sincerely,
Dr. Jerry Jailall
